The international diplomacy negotiation between CNN and Al-Jazeera

by on October 10, 2013

In the 21st century , media has a big impact on international diplomatic negotiations and it also has an impact on public opinion, this paper will discuss the role of CNN and Aljazeera channels on international governments. It will focus on Aljazeera role as neutral non-western player and why Aljazeera became an alternative source for the international world news.

The media has big impact on international diplomacy negotiations, it can be both positive or negative. In positive aspect, the media has interconnected nations with each other and brought countries closer. Through media which is quicker in transmitting information than the standard intelligent services.

The negative side of the media is that sometimes it leaks some information which will affect relations between countries.   For example,  CNN became an  American symbol and it shows the American hegemony, it reports all the international events to America, and it is easy to shape international public opinion for different reasons, first because it reports in the English language and most people around the world speak English, second they have reporters around many parts of the  world, which can  help them influence their people inside the country . Third, it favours of western standards and report from  western and American prospective on events and politics . Their reporting is from most powerful regions such as Europe and America.

CNN is the first channel which had 24/7 live coverage around the world. Followed by CNN reporting on international affairs to America and Vice versa. Moreover, they provide reports from around the world on TV and online, everyone can access those channels in addition to reporting on sports, sometimes live around the world.

The influential CNN was seen during the Gulf War, where CNN reports on inhumane treatment of Iraqi soldier and Iraqi attacks, which helped shape international public opinion and then requesting the UN to provide humanitarian intervention in kuwait.  CNN was able to raise awareness among European citizens which often resulted in European citizens putting pressure on their governments to act forcefully whether it was a military intervention as in Iraq or through the imposing of sanctions as in Iraq and other countries.
After 9/11   the emergence of other new news channels such as Aljazeera which created a more balanced reporting of incidents. Al-Jazeera involvement  was seen after 9/11 where it has reported  the war inside Afghanistan and explained its relation with Taliban. only Al-Jazeera was allowed to cover and provide news from Northern Afghanistan, it had a lot of contacts with the military officials .

During the bombing the American government was not giving proper information regarding the real situation. Al-Jazeera correspondents reported about civilian casualties. Aljazeera was showing images of badly burned of afghan children, women and men. At the same time the  relations between Aljazeera and the Pentagon became increasingly  unfriendly, it was not only with the American government, with Britain too, where the British government shown their antipathy towards Al-Jazeera. Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary then has announced that Al-Jazeera would be banned from broadcasting to Britain.(Miles P144)

It is not only the governments  which acted aggressively against Al-Jazeera, it was also most of the Western channels .For example CBS celebrity news Anchor Dan Rather was arguing  that  Bin Laden was  supporting Aljazeera. other reported that Aljazeera was an  anti- Israeli and anti- American and following  Islamic  wings . The channel was very influential in international public sphere,  because it was reporting from the conflict area not like CNN which was reporting miles away from the conflict. Another important thing is that during the 9/11 attacks Aljazeera was 24/7 covering.

Al-Aljazeera came to fill in the information void from western society coverage ; therefore, western governments tried to stop or ban Aljazeera  by closing its offices  in different part of the world, e.g. the closure of their offices in Iraq  and named it as a terrorist organization. In the west, a combination of limited – quality pictures and a pernicious climate of self-censorship made Aljazeera coverage seem vivid (miles P148) because it was showing the images of the truth and their correspondents working from the spots of action in order to provide realistic and fast reports where they put their life at risk. While CNN was still awaiting to get permission from the Pentagon to report fully on the international crises. Aljazeera channel has covered  not only the Middle East issues, but various issues from the rest of the world.

However after 9/11   the emergence of other news channels such as Aljazeera created a more balanced reporting of incidents. Al-Jazeera infulunation    has been seen after 9/11 where it was reported the war in Afghanistan and their relation with Talban .there was only Al-Jazeera was allowance to provide news from North Afghanistan and it had a lot of contact from military official. During the bombs the American government was not giving any information regard the situation .However, Al-Jazeera staff was reports about of civilian casualties. Aljazeera was showing images of badly burned of afghan children, women and men. At the same time the relation between Aljazeera and Pentagon became increasingly unfriendly, it was not only with American government it was also with Britain, where the British government shows their antipathy towards Al-Jazeera. Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary was announced that Al-Jazeera would be banned from broadcasting in Britain. (Miles P144)

It not only the governments  which was act aggressively against Al-Jazeera it was also the Western channels .For example CBS celebrity news Anchor Dan Rather was argued  that  abin Laden was  supporting Aljazeera .other reports that Aljazeera is  anti- Israel and anti- America and following  the Islamic  wings . The channel was very influential in international public sphere, because it was reporting from the conflict area not like CNN which was reporting mills away from the conflict. However,  In the west, a combination of limited –equality pictures and a pernicious climate of self-censorship made Aljazeera coverage seem vivid (miles P148) because it was showing the images of the truth and their staff working from the roots in order to reports quicker and they put their life in risk . While the CNN still waiting to get permission from Pentagons to report the international crises. An Aljazeera channel has covering   not only the Middle East issues but issues from the rest of the world.

to sum up

Media has an impact on societies and international diplomatic negotiations, it can be either good or bad. However, CNN works from western prospective while Aljazeera has challenged  the international governments with their neutral reporting “ Aljazeera voice of the voiceless” and became a household channel in America and the rest of theWestern world  .

Very good entry, you certainly make a good point stressing how media (and particularly the CNN) is far from being neutral. However I do not entirely agree with your point about morality, while I see your point it is fair to say that CNN (and other media companies) is not a charity and the issue with morality is doubled sided; the same as fairness and legality.
Morality is not a set term, it is understood very differently depending on the person, that is why I do not think is reasonable to expect for companies to be ‘moral’ the same I believed it may be exaggerated to say they work against people, I would rather simplify it and consider that, as any other company, they work for benefit at the same time they support some values and/or causes.
To sum up, is not quite predictable that a Western-based company, aimed at a Western public supports Western countries …
